SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27: FIRST MEDICAL SCHOOL FOR WOMEN
Profile America — Saturday, November 27th. The first school to provide training for women doctors in the nation opened this month in 1848 — the Boston Female Medical School. At the time, it had a faculty of two and 12 students. By 1874, the school had graduated almost 100 physicians. That year, it merged with the Boston University School of Medicine to form the world's first coed medical teaching facility. In recent years, nearly 16,000 medical degrees have been conferred annually in the U.S., almost exactly 50 percent earned by women. Across the nation, there are 877,000 physicians and surgeons, 31 percent of them women. In addition, women make up just over 27 percent of the country's dentists.
