SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 28: SACAGAWEA
Profile America — Sunday, November 28th. As National American Indian Heritage Month comes to a close, the impact of one American Indian woman on the course of American history is being noted. She was Sacajawea, of the Shoshone tribe, the only woman to join the vitally important Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806. Her services as guide and interpreter proved invaluable to the expedition, which mapped the newly acquired Western Territories between St. Louis and the Pacific Ocean. Among the almost 5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives today, some 30 percent speak a language other than English at home. The most common of these is Navajo. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
