TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18: MOBILE HEART CARE
Profile America — Tuesday, October 18th. A standard feature of hospitals across the country is 43 years old this month — an ambulance especially equipped to deal with cardiac patients. The idea of Dr. William Grace of Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York City, the special vehicle went into operation this month in 1968. It brought doctors, nurses, and paramedics to the patient's side within minutes of a heart attack. The ambulance was equipped with a defibrillator, respirator, and electrocardiograph equipment. The concept has saved countless lives. While the number of people dying each year from heart disease is declining, it is still the number one cause of death in the U.S. at just over 616,000 annually.
