U.S. Cities Threatened with Nuclear Warheads--NOW, Warns Physicians for Civil Defense

TUCSON, Ariz., July 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Korea has tested another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and claims to be able to hit the continental U.S. or "anywhere in the world." Some claim that Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. are within range. Some say it will take North Korea until 2020 or later to be able to land a nuclear weapon here.

"All these experts could be wrong," stated Physicians for Civil Defense president Jane M. Orient, M.D, "but we do know for a fact that all U.S. cities are indeed vulnerable to a nuclear strike—from Russian ICBMs."

"We also know from basic physics and many tests what such weapons can and cannot do."

"Our weapons cannot turn North Korea, much less Russia, into a radioactive parking lot," she said. "Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin know that, even if Americans do not."

"Putin also knows that American civilians have no defense and would suffer millions of preventable casualties in the event of an attack. Russians do have civil defense shelters, and Moscow, unlike Washington, D,C., has long had a ballistic missile defense shield," she added.

"We may imagine that any Russian-U.S. nuclear exchange would be a Dr. Strangelove scenario, The End for both sides. This is pure science fiction. Russia might perceive that its relative position in the world would be far better after unleashing nukes, especially if the U.S. electrical power grid was destroyed."

"Harsh economic sanctions passed nearly unanimously by Congress could contribute to that impression," Dr. Orient warned. These sanctions also have an unprecedented provision to limit presidential power to mitigate them.

"Our first priority should be protection of our homeland and our citizens. The defensive side of the equation has long been neglected here. We have bomb shelters for Congress, and only do-it-yourself protection for citizens endangered by government policy."
