U.S. Consumers Received Over 4.1 Billion Robocalls in August 2025, According to YouMail Robocall Index

2025 Robocall Volume Up More Than 7% Year Over Year

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. consumers received just over 4.1 billion robocalls in August, according to YouMail's latest Robocall Index. This figure is a 4% decrease from July and a 6.1% decrease compared to August 2024. It also marks the fourth consecutive monthly decline since volume peaked in April, with robocall volume now approximately 16% below that peak.

So far, the first eight months of 2025 have seen 36.7 billion robocalls, which is an approximately 7.1% increase over the same period in 2024.

In August robocall activity averaged 133.9 million robocalls/day and 1,550 robocalls/second, down 4% from July's average of 144.0 million robocalls/day and 1,666 robocalls/second.

"We've now seen four straight months of declining call volume from 2025 peaks," said YouMail CEO Alex Quilici. "That's good news. The fly in the ointment is that 2025 is still on a pace to exceed 2024's volumes by more than 7%."

These latest figures are provided by YouMail, a totally free app that protects consumers from unwanted or dangerous calls, texts, and voicemails. The data is extrapolated from robocall traffic attempting to reach YouMail's millions of active users.

Roughly 60% Of August's Robocalls Are Unwanted

A positive takeaway from August's data is that robocall volume declined across all categories.

However, scam and telemarketing calls that people generally want to avoid still accounted for 60% of all robocall volume, the same as in July, despite a drop of roughly 100 million calls during the month.

August 2025's Most Annoying Robocalls

As in June and July, the most problematic robocalls in August were related to various types of loans, particularly payday loan debt relief. These calls featured messages like:

These payday loan debt reduction campaigns are problematic due to their high volume, which likely reached tens of millions of calls in August alone. They cover a variety of different debt issues, like payday loans, tax debt, business loans, and more. The calls in each individual robocall campaign originate from thousands of different numbers, often making only a few calls from each. They consistently claim to be a specific individual, using various versions of the same basic message. The calls do not clearly identify the organization behind them. They are calling numbers on the do not call list and do not appear to honor opt-out requests. Based on consumer feedback, they also target people who never contacted the company or requested a call. This behavior is indicative of, at worst, a scam and at best, very shady telemarketing.
