Trocars can be disposable, reusable or reposable. The majority of trocars are disposable in the United States, meaning they can only be used once before being discarded. Reusable trocars are most often made of metal, with a metal or plastic cannula, and can be used many times before needing to be replaced. When a trocar is reposable, part of the assembly is discarded, while the cannula or other blades are reused. For the purpose of this report, only the disposable trocar component of the reposable unit is included in the total market value.

Single port access devices are a newer form of trocar. They have similar functions to standard trocars, but require only one incision point in the abdomen. The port can accommodate the entry of multiple instruments instead of having two or three incision points for each instrument. This method minimizes the appearance of scars.

Abstract
Laparoscopic access devices are used for puncturing the body to allow a laparoscope, as well as other instruments, to be inserted into the abdominal cavity. Trocars are a particular type of access device that consists of three primary components, namely the cannula, the seal and the obturator.

The cannula is a tube-shape shaft which is placed in the patient to allow access into the abdominal cavity during a laparoscopic procedure. The seal is located at the top of the cannula, and allows instruments to pass through the cannula while preventing air from escaping the abdominal cavity, thereby maintaining proper air pressure during the procedure. The obturator is the mechanism that allows the cannula to penetrate the abdomen, and together, these three components make up the trocar. Although veress needles, insufflator tubing, hand-assisted devices, and other components are also considered part of the access device market by some, this chapter addresses only trocars.
