Conventionally, mechanical compression staples, manufactured from either stainless steel or titanium, have been a popular form of fixation for osteotomy and arthrodesis. However, studies have shown that this type of staple provides inconsistent compression and distraction, and hence does not result in optimal bone healing. This is in contrast to the second type of staple device: shape memory staples.

Shape memory staples are manufactured from nitinol, which is an alloy of titanium and nickel that changes configuration in a temperature-sensitive manner. Specifically, the staple prongs are pliant and straightened at a temperature either higher or lower than body temperature, permitting easy insertion into the bone. Subsequently, as temperature approaches body temperature, the staple prongs deflect inward, causing staple retention and compression across fractured sites. This inward bending creates a "claw effect" and helps prevent the staple from losing its grip.

Abstract
Various research studies have shown that shape memory staples are capable of achieving consistent compression across the fusion site with significantly greater maximum force when compared with mechanical compression staples. In fact, mechanical compression staples cause a distractive force that may hinder proper fracture recovery. For this reason, shape memory staples, having properties to sustain sufficient energy for bone fusion, are becoming more accepted by surgeons as the standard of care.
