WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Ferroglobe USA, Inc. ("Ferroglobe") and Mississippi Silicon LLC ("Mississippi Silicon"), representing all American silicon metal production, welcomed the recent favorable preliminary determinations by the U.S. Department of Commerce ("Commerce") in the investigations of unfairly priced and subsidized silicon metal imports from Angola, Australia, Laos, Norway, and Thailand.
Silicon metal is a critical material used in everything from aluminum and silicones to solar panels and semiconductors. U.S. producers say the decisions are an important step toward ensuring a level playing field and protecting a domestic industry vital to national security and clean energy. The cases cover all forms and sizes of silicon metal, which contains at least 85.00 percent but less than 99.99 percent silicon, and less than 4.00 percent iron, by actual weight.
On September 23, 2025, Commerce announced preliminary countervailing duties on subsidized imports of silicon metal from Australia (41.31%), Laos (240.00%), Norway (16.87%), and Thailand (31.27%). These duties took effect as of September 26, 2025.
On September 26, 2025, Commerce announced preliminary antidumping duties on unfairly priced imports of silicon metal from Angola (68.45%) and Laos (94.44%). These duties took effect as of September 30, 2025.
Additional rulings are expected later this year:
- November 21, 2025 – preliminary antidumping decisions expected for Australia and Norway
- December 11, 2025 – final determinations expected for Angola, Laos, and Thailand
"We thank the hard-working professionals at the U.S. Commerce Department for their diligent work on these complex cases," said Marco Levi, Chief Executive Officer of Ferroglobe PLC. "We look forward to the final determinations in December."
"These decisions are an important step toward returning fair competition in the U.S. market," said Eddie Boardwine, Chief Executive Officer of Mississippi Silicon. "For our employees, customers, and communities, this action helps ensure a strong future for American manufacturing."
