Democrats will elect a chairman on February 23 at the 2013 party convention in Detroit.
"Working families have been under fire for far too long in this country, and many of the battles we've faced have been in our state capitols," said USW International President Leo W. Gerard. "That's why it is so important to make sure we have dynamic leaders who will fight on behalf of workers in states like Michigan. Lon Johnson is that kind of leader."
Johnson, a 2012 candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives, has been active in Michigan politics for 20 years. The son of a steelworker, Johnson received more than 47 percent of the vote in November while running against an incumbent Republican in a conservative district.
"The challenges Michigan faces require a bold new direction, and Lon Johnson is the best candidate to take us there," said USW District 2 Director Michael Bolton. "From grassroots activism to fundraising to technology to engaging new voters, Lon has the talent and the vision to lead the Democratic Party to a stronger and more vibrant future."
In a letter to Michigan Democrats last week, the entire Michigan Democratic Congressional delegation also supported Johnson's candidacy.
The USW represents about 850,000 workers in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean in a wide variety of industries, ranging from glassmaking to mining, steel, oil, paper, tire and rubber to the public sector, service and health care industries.
