NEW YORK, March 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Voya Investment Management, the asset management business of Voya Financial, Inc. (NYSE: VOYA), announced today that the Voya GNMA Income Fund has won a 2016 Thomson Reuters Lipper Fund Award for its class I shares (LEINX) in Lipper's GNMA Funds Five Year category. The Voya GNMA Income Fund has more than $1 billion in assets under management as of January 1, 2016 and seeks a high level of current income, consistent with liquidity and safety of principal, by investing primarily in Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) mortgage-backed securities. These securities are guaranteed as to the timely payment of principal and interest by the U.S. government.
The Lipper Awards honor those funds and fund management firms that have excelled in providing consistently strong risk-adjusted performance relative to their peers. Performance is evaluated through November 30, 2015. More information about the fund can be found here.
Managed by Jeff Dutra, CFA, Justin McWhorter, CFA, CPA, and Peter Guan, PhD., the GNMA Income Fund is one of the oldest mortgage-backed securities funds in the market. Led by a stable and experienced management team, the fund invests in GNMA securities with maturities in excess of one year and that have the same credit quality as U.S. Treasury securities, but with higher yields to compensate for prepayment uncertainty.
"With an investment history that stretches back to 1973, this was one of the first pure play GNMA funds in the industry," said Christine Hurtsellers, chief investment officer for Fixed Income at Voya Investment Management. "That track record, the expertise of the team and the resources of over 100 fixed income professionals makes a very powerful combination for investors."
In making their evaluations, Lipper reviews funds based on the following criteria:
- Funds registered for sale in the respective country as of the end of the calendar year of the respective evaluation year.
- At least 36 months of performance history as of the end of the calendar year of the respective evaluation year.
- Lipper Global classifications with at least 10 distinct portfolios based on the primary share class definition, excluding residual classifications, institutional and other non-retail funds, private, closed-end, exchange-traded, insurance, and linked funds.
- Asset classes: equity, bond, mixed-asset, commodity, and alternatives. Absolute Return funds screen over all asset types except real estate.
Thomson Reuters Lipper's renowned fund data and proprietary methodology is the foundation of the award qualification. Individual classification of the three-, five-, and 10-year periods, as well as eight fund families with high average scores for the three-year period are recognized for their superior firm-wide performance. More information about the specific methodology can be found here.
