WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair set for April 17th at Great Neck High School North
GREAT NECK, N.Y., April 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Created to launch the education and career paths of young scientists, the Research Association and WAC Lighting are once again hosting the 2016 WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair. The event will be held at John L Miller Great Neck High School North on 35 Polo Road in Great Neck, from 8 AM to 4 PM on Sunday, April 17, 2016.
The Research Association is a consortium of thirteen schools and their science and research teachers who are dedicated to the importance of using science as a verb, and helping students to learn science by actively engaging in the scientific process. More than 400 hundred students from schools across Long Island, New York have come together annually for the past 20-plus years to present their research to esteemed judges from leading universities and hospitals located throughout the New York metropolitan area. The symposium provides students with specific goals with awards, as they spend many months working on their projects in preparation for the fair.
"This science fair is a true celebration of science, technology and research," explains WAC Lighting President Shelley Wald. "We love this event and are always excited to see the latest research projects of these young scientists."
The fair includes eight major categories with winners selected from projects developed and completed by high school students ranging in grades 9 through 12. Awards and scholarships will be presented to winners of First, Second and Third Place, as well as Honorable Mentions. Participating students have spent months, and even years, in labs exploring Environmental Science, Prototype Engineering, Biochemistry, General Biology, Behavioral Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, and Computer Science.
Participating students have gone on to pursue advanced studies at leading educational institutions: Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Stony Brook University; Harvard University; Yale University; Brown University; Johns Hopkins University; Stanford University; University of Rochester; and other top schools.
Judges include over 120 academicians and professionals who are affiliated with leading institutions: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Columbia University, Long Island University, New York University, North Shore University Hospital-North Shore LIJ Health System, Wiell Cornell Medicine, Hofstra University and Mount Sinai Hospital.
