Weber State University Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities On Track to Welcome Largest Freshman Class in Five Years

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Weber State University Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities (www.weber.edu/cah) today announced it is on track to welcome its largest new freshman class since 2013. Official enrollment numbers will not be finalized until the third week of class; however, based on preliminary admissions data, this year's class will be nearly 4 percent larger than the one admitted last fall. Weber State University's Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities is increasingly welcoming students who desire 'creativity,' 'flexibility,' 'affordability,' and the 'opportunity to earn a degree that will prepare them for an unpredictable future.'

"I was recruited to play basketball extensively by many other schools, including the Ivy League," said Israel Barnes, incoming freshman Creative Writing major and guard for the Weber State University basketball team. "I love basketball and writing. The ability to pursue both of my passions at Weber State University is a dream come true," said Barnes.

Classes in the Lindquist College will begin on Monday, August 27. The year class includes:

• 3.6 percent increase in total students with declared majors in the arts and humanities
• 4.2 percent increase in declared students majoring in communication
• 14 percent increase in numbers of students majors declared in the arts

Chia-Ying (Julia) Shen from Taiwan selected Weber State University's piano program to continue her education studies due to its national ranking and All-Steinway-School designation. Shen has won countless international piano competitions and won first place at the Asia Region International Piano Festival. Damien Poelman is an incoming freshman planning to study theatre. In an effort to determine what majors and career options are available, he reached out to the Lindquist College Theatre area and inquired about an internship. While still a high school student, he assisted the area's master electrician on two theatre productions, "Where Words Once Were" and "Class of 94." 

"Incoming students are learning that the job they are likely to have in ten years hasn't even been invented yet," said Scott Sprenger, Dean of the Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities. "We know from research that as new technologies displace existing jobs, graduates will be changing careers on average five to seven times during their lifetime. The education required to pivot successfully from one career to the next when disruption inevitably occurs is without question a broad-based liberal arts education; it will protect against job obsolescence," said Sprenger.
