Weber State University Visual Arts Faculty Member, Adam Bateman Awarded Prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship

Bateman first artist in state of Utah to be recognized by Mitchell Foundation for his contemporary art and creative achievements

OGDEN, Utah, Feb. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Weber State University's Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities (http://weber.edu/cah), today announced Adam Bateman, a visual arts faculty member, has been awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship. Bateman is the first artist in Utah to receive this distinction. The Joan Mitchell Foundation supports the aspirations and development of diverse contemporary artists.

"Adam has played a pivotal role in advancing artistic expression in the state of Utah and we join in supporting the Joan Mitchell Foundation in continuing to broaden the recognition of artists and their essential contributions to students, communities and society."

The Joan Mitchell Foundation was established in 1993 to fulfill the ambitions of Joan Mitchell, a world-renowned painter, to aid and assist contemporary artists and to demonstrate that painting and sculpture are significant cultural necessities. Nominators from across the country recommend artists who they feel deserve recognition for their creative achievements and whose practice would significantly benefit from the grant. The candidates' images are viewed for consideration through an anonymous process by a jury panel at the New York Foundation for the Arts. Nominators and jurors include prominent visual artists, curators, and art educators.

"Art is vital and an essential means to learning critical thinking skills.
