Wellness Advocate Founds Center for At-Risk Girls

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Feb. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- After facing the challenges of being an at-risk teen herself, doTERRA Wellness Advocate Toshia Shaw founded the Purple W.I.N.G.S. (Women Inspiring Noble Girls Successfully) organization to help at-risk girls get the support and refuge they need. Toshia began this program after she realized there were a significant amount of homeless, runaway, and sex-trafficked girls in her community. With her background in human services, she is able to reach out and make a difference in the lives of these girls.

Since most of the girls who enter the Purple W.I.N.G.S. program have been victims of violence, sexual abuse, and poverty, many of them suffer with emotional health issues. One of the main issues that these girls face is extreme depression. Some of the factors that can lead to the onset of depression include physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, loss of a loved one, illness, and substance abuse, most of which have impacted these girls in one way or another. Aside from depression, some of the girls struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolarity, anger management, and self-esteem issues.

The Purple W.I.N.G.S. organization targets these specific problems and is dedicated to providing specialized programs to nurture these noble girls back to a healthy state. A main part of their program includes a weekly chat session designed to correct negative behaviors. For members with additional needs, the organization offers mentoring meetings to help girls avoid risky behaviors, make positive life decisions, and overcome past traumatic experiences. Purple W.I.N.G.S. also recognizes that relationships between struggling teens and their parents can be rocky, and as a result, they have implemented a family mediation program to improve conflict resolution between parents and children in their times of need.
