CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- At a magical evening on Saturday, November 8, 2014, The Wende Museum, together with co-hosts City of Culver City, Benedikt Taschen and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the launch of Beyond the Wall, Art and Artifacts from the GDR, a new TASCHEN encyclopedia from the Museum's East German holdings.
The event kicked off the public phase of the Wende's Capital Campaign. Top collectors, philanthropists, diplomats and politicians, along with actors Steve Martin, Nastassja Kinski, and Thomas Kretschmann gathered at the Wende's home-in-progress in Culver City's former National Guard Armory, where some 500 people enjoyed the festivities and previewed the building.
"Mysteries at the Museum" host Don Wildman was MC. Guests were treated to live performances by Nathan Willett and Matt Schwartz from "Cold War Kids," Berlin-based artist and composer Frank Bretschneider performed an East German soundscape with a visual accompaniment, and Valida, KCRW DJ, provided the evening's musical accompaniment. Justin Jampol and Benedikt Taschen drove up in East Germany's signature, but hard-to-obtain Trabant to present the #1 book from a special edition that was auctioned live. Event exhibitions featured the Wende collection: Highlights: Beyond the Wall, In Transition, Monuments Transformed, Freedom Rocks, and Christof Zweiner's ADN Guardhouse installation. Clips from films were screened including Collecting Fragments, the story of how the Wende collection began.
