West Virginia's NPLEx Technology Making Significant Progress
Point-Of-Sale System Blocks Illegal Pseudoephedrine Sales But Protects Lawful Purchase
LUTHERVILLE, Md., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) today highlighted the latest results achieved by West Virginia's real-time, stop-sale pseudoephedrine (PSE) tracking system.
The National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) system automatically blocks unlawful pseudoephedrine purchases at the point of sale and helps flag meth offenders for law enforcement. Police officers and narcotics agents often set up NPLEx "watch lists" that notify them via email when a meth suspect attempts to make a PSE purchase. The most recent NPLEx data show that in West Virginia, the technology has blocked the sale of 9,047 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine since the start of 2014, keeping 24,352 grams out of the hands of potential meth criminals.
Additionally, West Virginia sold 31.52 percent fewer boxes of PSE compared to the same period in 2013. The number of individual purchasers was further reduced by 21.41 percent.
"West Virginia's success stands as a model for every state using NPLEx," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of NADDI. "The state achieved a significant reduction in boxes of pseudoephedrine sold – by over 30 percent – and a similarly large drop in unique purchasers. We know that NPLEx is being used as an effective deterrent for meth criminals in West Virginia. They are thinking twice before they purchase these products for use in their illegal activities. Furthermore, they understand the risks of getting caught. Law enforcement and retailers are working together, and they mean business."
