This comes as the China-Europe Arctic container express route (China-Europe Arctic Express), which completed its trial voyage last year, enters a new shipping season with regular weekly sailings. On August 15, "Dubai Tower," this season's first container ship, set sail from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, bound for Europe via the Arctic Northeast Passage. It is expected to arrive next week.

First, speed. Conventional China-Europe sea freight via the Suez Canal takes at least 40 days. Vessels forced to detour around the Cape of Good Hope face take even longer. The four major European hub ports on the Arctic Express itinerary, however, lie in northwestern and central Europe. Transiting the Arctic slashes voyage distance, and with less time spent waiting and berthing – yes – the China-Europe Arctic Express completes a one-way trip in just 20 days.

Second, temperature. This voyage carries large quantities of high-value heat-sensitive cargo, including battery energy-storage containers, power batteries, and new energy components. The Arctic offers natural cold-chain shipping conditions, reducing cargo damage and cutting costs of temperature-controlled transport.

Third, risk resilience. With the Middle East in turmoil, shipping lanes through the Red Sea and Suez Canal have been disrupted. Unexpected congestion occurs frequently, driving up costs from vessel backlogs. Delivery timelines, as well as cargo and crew safety, are hard to guarantee. It's fair to say that the regular operation of the China-Europe Arctic Express offers a highly viable backup for global trade troubled by geopolitical tensions. This is not about building a separate "kitchen" from scratch. Rather, it means expanding the "kitchen" and lighting more "cooking stoves," so the "dishes" are served faster and in better condition.

In short, this north-bound corridor for China-Europe trade reflects how China's supply chains precisely match new demands in global trade. Admittedly, its near-term economic benefits are modest, and the navigation season is short. Even so, for certain shipping seasons, cargo types and geopolitical contexts, this waterway gives importers and exporters a new, more stable alternative. Its long-term strategic value far outweighs its immediate economic returns.

In 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping first formally proposed jointly building the "Polar Silk Road." This year, the China-Europe Arctic Express entered regular service. In about a decade, we have not only witnessed steady improvements in China's overall supply-chain capacity and influence, but also seen China emerge as an increasingly vital stabilizer and unifying force for global supply chains.

The last vessel of this season's Arctic Express is set to reach Europe in late October. Many European families may receive their Christmas gifts not delivered by Santa's reindeer sleigh — but by Chinese cargo ships sailing across Arctic ice.
