William N. Kelley, MD, MACP, Recognized for Excellence in Medicine

With more than 50 years of professional excellence to his credit, Dr. Kelley has been a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia since 1989. Joining the university as a Robert G. Dunlop professor of medicine and dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, he also served as the chief executive officer of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and Health System from 1989 to 2000. Currently, Dr. Kelley is active as a professor of medicine with the university.

Prior to his tenure with the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kelley spent over a decade with the Medical School at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A professor of biological chemistry and internal medicine with the university from 1975 to 1989, he was the chair of the department of internal medicine during that time as well. He previously held a number of roles with the School of Medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC.

Beginning his research career as a clinical associate in the section on human biochemical genetics with the Arthritis and Rheumatism Branch of the National Institutes of Health in 1965, Dr. Kelley also spent time as a teaching fellow of medicine at Harvard University in Massachusetts and a Macy Faculty scholar at the University of Oxford in England. In addition to his primary career responsibilities, he has donated his expertise to a number of other professional endeavors as well. Currently on the board of directors for TransEnterix Surgical, Inc., Dr. Kelley has served on the board of directors of other public companies including Beckman Coulter, Inc., and Merck & Co., Inc., and has been involved on a number of committees and subcommittees with the National Institutes of Health.

An accomplished writer in his field, Dr. Kelley has co-edited numerous early editions of "Kelley and Firestein's Textbook of Rheumatology" (previously "Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology") and "Kelley's Textbook of Internal Medicine." Also acting as editor-in-chief for several editions of these books, he was also editor-in chief for "Essentials of Internal Medicine" and co-editor of "Arthritis Surgery" and "Emerging Policies for Bio-Medical Research." Furthermore, due to his decades of research, Dr. Kelley was co-inventor of a "Viral-Mediated Gene Transfer System" (US Patent 5,672,344 submitted on 12/30/87, issued on 9/30/1997.)

With a passionate desire to help the United States to develop the best health care ecosystem in the world, Dr. Kelley is notable for developing the first fully integrated university based academic health system in the country at the University of Pennsylvania. Pursuing an education at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, he earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1963 and subsequently completed an internship and residency at the Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX. He concluded his studies as a senior resident of medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1968. Dr. Kelley was award an honorary Master of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989.

Recognized for his contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Kelley was presented with the Kober Medal by the Association of American Physicians in 2005 and the Emory Medal in 2000. The recipient of numerous other honors and accolades over the years, he has received the David E. Rogers Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Gold Medal Award from the American College of Rheumatology, the Robert H. Williams Award from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, and the National Medical Research Award from the National Health Council, among many others. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Kelley has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Corporate America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. Impressively, he is a master of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology, and he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
