The prize was awarded last evening, Tuesday, November 12, 2013, in New York City at a banquet dinner at the Four Seasons Restaurant featuring the esteemed Paul Volcker, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, and noted economist Larry Kudlow of CNBC.
Coolidge, a great American president, valued brevity, a restrained Federal government, balanced budgets, low tax rates, an active state government, and civility and respect for religious faith. "The quality and number of the applications received was astounding," Amity Shlaes, board chairman said, "and I am proud to say Holman Jenkins' writing brilliantly reflects the timeliness of Coolidge's message." Chairman Volcker added that the Coolidge message allows us to "better understand the forces bearing on the president and Congress almost a century later." Jenkins added, "I am honored to accept this Prize...maybe it will help us to remember what Coolidge stood for at a time when we need him most."
Chairman Volker commented on the Fed and its present policies: "The day will come...they will have to permit the normal market forces to operate in such a way that interest rates may resume more normal levels."
The Foundation is grateful for the support of the Thomas W. Smith Foundation for the establishment of this prize. Projects undertaken by the Foundation, based at Coolidge's birthplace in Plymouth Notch, VT, include economic debate, events, publishing and scholarship on Coolidge and his values.
The foundation announced its expansion and will be led by new Executive Director, Matthew Denhart. The board looks forward to awarding next year's Coolidge and Calvin Prizes. To become a member of the Foundation, join at www.calvin-coolidge.org or call 802.672.3389.
