Winners of Fleming Faculty Awards at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Announced

HOUSTON, April 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- George Fleming, Managing Partner of the Houston-based law firm Fleming | Nolen | Jez, L.L.P., congratulates the winners of the Fleming faculty awards at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, which provides a Catholic college preparatory education for young men in the greater Houston area. The award recipients were announced in a ceremony held on April 27, 2016.

The Fleming Award for Teaching Excellence was established in 2005 in memory of George McMillan Fleming, Ed.D. Dr. Fleming received his Bachelor's degree in Education at Arizona State University and became a teacher in Florence, Arizona, where he taught primarily the children of American Indians and migrant farm workers. He earned a doctorate in education from the University of Houston. He enjoyed a successful career in hospital administration but always maintained his love of education, teaching, and teachers. Two Fleming Award winners are selected annually for both excellence in the classroom and also for cura personalis of their students.

The Fleming Fund for Teaching Enrichment was also established in 2005. The principal goal of the program is to provide monetary support of faculty-initiated requests for professional enhancement to improve classroom teaching. Examples of past grants are: a Theology teacher traveling through Israel, absorbing the geography, visiting the archeological and holy sites, and interacting with the people; Physics teachers traveling to Chernobyl to study the effects on the people from the 1986 meltdown; and a Computer Science teacher attending a technology conference in Scotland, learning about new products and techniques to improve Strakes' current course offerings, improving current classes' extra-curricular activities.
