Winners of the 2015 Reaxys PhD Prize Announced

Three chemistry researchers are recognized for innovative and original research  

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the three winners of the 2015 Reaxys PhD Prize at the annual Symposium held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Celebrating top research conducted by leading young chemists across the globe, the Reaxys PhD Prize recognizes innovative and original research in chemistry, with an emphasis on synthesis. The Reaxys PhD Prize is the world's most prestigious award for young chemists, with over 2500 submissions from around the world in its six year history.

The 2015 Reaxys PhD Prize winners are:

• Andrew Jupp from the Goicoechea group, University of Oxford.
• John Tellis from the Molander group, University of Pennsylvania.
• Shinnosuke Uno from the Urano group, University of Tokyo.

The three winners were selected from a group of nine top finalists, who each gave a 15 minute oral presentation describing the essence of their research. These oral presentations enabled the finalists to display one of the other great skills any researcher requires: the ability to succinctly describe their work. The presentations were judged by members of the Reaxys Advisory Board and Chairs of the Reaxys PhD Prize review board.

The judges deliberated at length. The presentations were all of the highest quality. They were challenged to discuss the key aspects of their research in a crisp yet critical manner; each of the candidates prepared very thoroughly. The three winners each receive a cheque for $2000 and they will join a list of illustrious previous winners in the Reaxys Prize Club.

"We were hugely impressed with the quality of the presentations," said Prof Eiichi Nakamura, University of Tokyo, and one of the judges. "The science presented was of a very high standard, a lot of time and effort was put into effectively communicating their research. We discussed each presentation in depth looking at the novelty of their research, the impact we imagined the research will have, and their communication skills. This was not an easy decision, each candidate had merit. However in the end we all agreed that these three winners were the best overall combining all aspects of the Reaxys PhD Prize criteria and their presentations."
