Winning Investment Strategies Produced Strong Gains Despite Slumping Stock Market in 2015

The top 15 trading strategies from the software's monthly newsletter produced annual gains ranging from 11 percent to 96 percent. These trading strategies, he said, came from groups based upon ETF sectors, large cap stocks, and ETFs focused on the U.S. market, other stock, and mutual fund groups of ticker symbols.

The compound annual return for these same trading strategies ranged from 11 percent to 45 percent for the time period beginning with January 2005 through December 2015.

Finding winning strategies is possible even with the market slumps of the past few weeks, Dominick said. He pointed out that many of the software program's trading models that are included with the program are still producing gains. So far this year many have produced year-to-date gains of 2 percent to 3 percent for the first two weeks of 2016. The strategies gaining so far this year are primarily based on Fidelity Select funds, ETF asset and ETF sector groups of ticker symbols.

Dominick added that the programs market exit signal incorporated in many of the strategies currently suggests moving to bonds. The market exit signal evaluates the equity curve of the S&P 500 to determine if the S&P is running above or below its average.

In using the equity curve, an average based upon a short time period produces more trading in and out of bonds or the market itself, while an average equity curve of around 100 trading days generally protects an investor from major market declines, Dominick said.
