Winning Writers Announces the Winners of the 16th Annual Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest

NORTHAMPTON, Mass., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Winning Writers is pleased to announce the results from its sixteenth annual Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest. Penny-Anne Beaudoin of Amherstburg, Ontario won first prize and $1,000 for her comedic poem, "The Magician's Assistant". 4,277 contestants from around the world participated.

Jendi Reiter, final judge of the Wergle Flomp contest, said the winning poem "employs snappy internal rhymes and double-entendres" as the title character "rebels on behalf of the women in a myriad of professions who've been expected to make an incompetent man look good."

Second prize of $250 went to Mary Somerville of Nashville, Tennessee for "A Friend to All Is a Friend to None". Reiter said: "In this gentle narrative, Plato and Aristotle pare down their shallow social media networks to appreciate the virtues of two old buddies enjoying Netflix and chill." Third prize of $150 went to Jennifer Teunon of Seattle, Washington for "Mind Over Mindfulness", which eavesdrops on the stream-of-consciousness ruminations of a bored mom at a middle school band concert. Reiter said: "Her well-meaning struggle to treasure the moment rings very true, unlike some of the performers' notes."

Ten Honorable Mentions of $100 went to Daniel Ari, Dawn Daniels, Tim Eberle, Claudia Matos, Abby McCambridge, Jane Mitchell, Taryn Parrish, Lee Patton, Karen Schubert, and Beth Spencer.
