WASHINGTON, March 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Adapting the tools of machine learning and artificial intelligence to hiring in the long-term care industry requires precise, transparent and intuitive processes to be successful, Myra Norton, President and COO of Arena, told attendees at the inaugural LeadingAge Leadership Summit here.
With turnover in all roles in senior living continuing to rise and the U.S. in the midst of a near full-employment economy, conventional hiring practices aren't meeting the industry's needs, she said. Predictive analytics create value by applying large amounts of data to better align talent with opportunity, affecting all aspects of human resources, from recruiting to hiring to training to managing and retention, Norton noted. Arena combines large amounts of applicant, third-party and proprietary behavioral data with artificial intelligence to help employers to identify the best people for each role and help job seekers find meaningful work where they are exceptional.
As with all technology-enabled platforms, leaders and staff need to have confidence in the quality of the output or it becomes just another piece of underutilized software, Norton said. "Predictions must be accurate and consistent or users will perceive them as noise and stop using them. The most accurate predictions won't make any difference if people don't use them to make their day-to-day decisions. So data must be collected with as little friction as possible and predictions must be presented in a way that is intuitive for all people to understand."
She noted that two large players in long-term care have seen significant reductions in turnover using Arena. Sunrise Senior Living improved 90-day employee retention by 27% and one-year retention by 14%. Benchmark Senior Living has found that Arena-recommended hires are turning over more than 30% less often than non-recommended staff. Overall turnover at Benchmark is down by 10%.
Arena collects, analyzes and incorporates robust data to predict a given applicant's likelihood to succeed in a particular healthcare organizations' culture.
