Wizdy: Leveraging games to cultivate healthy lifestyle habits
Wizdy Pets, a new educational mobile game, empowers kids to understand and control asthma
BOSTON, Dec. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Kids spend an average of thirteen hours a week playing games. Wizdy is putting that gaming time to good use by combining educational health & lifestyle content with fun. In their first game, kids adopt their very own Wizdy pet, an adorable fire-breathing dragon who wants to blow fire like all of its friends, but can't because it has asthma. It's up to kids to care for their pet's asthma, the same way they would manage their own asthma, so that it can blow fire and defeat the pesky smog monster! Wizdy Pets is now available on the Apple App Store and Google Play for $1.99 and will soon be available on Amazon.
The team collaborated with asthma specialists from Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital to teach kids the most important aspects of proper asthma care; inhaler technique and timing, trigger identification and avoidance, and symptom recognition and the appropriate actions to avoid asthma attacks. Wizdy rebranded from Wellapets.
Doctor and mom recommended
"Wizdy Pets offers an engaging, fun way for kids to learn about asthma attack prevention, the difference between rescue and maintenance inhalers, and how to avoid asthma triggers. It's a good model for clinicians to consider." – Henry G. Wei, MD, Cornell, Weill Medical College, dad, inaugural Presidential Innovation Fellow
"If children played 'Wizdy Pets' for even three months, I think what you learn from it is enough to carry farther into your life." -- Ann Wu, MD, MPH, Harvard Medical School, asthma mom, author of asth.ma blog
