Workers United Launches Campaign to Call on NYC Hotels to Drop Carnegie Linen Services for Assaulting, Firing and trying to Bribe an Employee
NEW YORK, Oct. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), launched an online and field campaign calling on New York City hoteliers to use responsible contractors for their linen services and to drop contractors who abuse their workers. The campaign's first action and series of ads will focus on Carnegie Linen Services, a laundry contractor which the federal government found guilty of committing civil labor law violations including attempting to bribe, assaulting and firing an employee for trying to organize a union.
The campaign began with a series of hard-hitting online ads scheduled to begin running today, as well as on-the-ground actions designed to raise awareness about workplace conditions faced by workers at Carnegie Linen. The ads urge consumers to sign a petition asking the Waldorf Astoria to drop Carnegie Valet.
Francisco Zapata who works in a laundry and attended today's event said: "People have no idea what we go through in those laundries so that hospital patients can go to bed on clean sheets; so that patients have clean clothes. They don't have a clue who the people are who do that work for them. They have no idea of what our lives are like."
More than two dozen laundry workers from the New York City area marched down Park Avenue to the iconic Waldorf Astoria to request a meeting with hotel executives. Gary Perlson, a principal of Carnegie Linen Services and Carnegie Valet Cleaning Corp., is facing assault charges and is scheduled to go to trial Oct. 15. Perlson is standing trial for assault after throwing a cup of hot coffee in the face of an employee fighting for a fair and safe workplace.
