World Youth Peace Summit Aims To Increase Role of Women in the Peace Process

HARTFORD, Conn., June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The World Youth Peace Summit (WYPS), an initiative of the Institute for International Sport, has set an important objective to give women a greater voice in the peace process.

Daniel E. Doyle Jr., Founder and Director of the World Youth Peace Summit made the following statement:

"One of the most impressive outcomes of Title IX is that the legislation opened the doors to women to enter the field of sport as professionals in a variety of areas.  There is better policy, better writing, and infinitely more enlightened thinking on ways that we can use sport as a means to educate.

As a student at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in the '80s, I recall one of my professors stating that of the people in our world making decisions on peace and war, less than 2% are women.  Regrettably, that statistic has not changed very much."

On July 2nd one of the featured panels is the "Voices of Women."  The panel will be chaired by The Honorable Silvia Poll, Costa Rican Ambassador to the U.N., Olympic medalist and member of the "Champions for Peace" club of elite athletes committed to serving peace through sport.  This panel will be followed by a spring 2012 symposium at the Center for Social Entrepreneurship focusing on this important issue.

About the WYPS

Taking place from July 1-4, 2011 in Hartford, Connecticut, it will bring together engaged citizens from all over the world and foster international dialogue, along with awareness and exploration of community-building initiatives. Individuals and organizations will present the story and process behind their work and impart "how-to" knowledge during workshops and lectures. The WYPS mission is to take the positive energy and motivation of engaged citizens and to encourage the creation and implementation of community-building initiatives all over the world.

Keynote addresses include Brad Corrigan (of the band Dispatch), Nobel Laureate Jody Williams and General Colin Powell.  The Summit will also feature a number of panel discussions such as "Voices of United Nations", which will include six leading U.N. Diplomats.
