Yale School of Medicine Receives $10M Grant to Launch Inflammation Initiative

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Yale School of Medicine (YSM) was awarded a $10 million grant from the Blavatnik Family Foundation (BFF) to launch a new research initiative in the field of inflammation science. This gift advances a key institutional priority for YSM, enabling its scientists to explore the role of inflammation in human health and disease. It will also fund graduate and postdoctoral fellowships.

This grant focuses on the fundamental mechanism(s) of immune development in health and disease."

The grant will be dedicated to understanding the fundamental principles that govern inflammation. Inflammatory diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly damages healthy tissue, leading to chronic inflammation that can affect almost any organ or system in the body.

Inflammation is now understood to be a factor in nearly every major human illness, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. An estimated 23.5 million people in the United States are affected.

Advancing inflammation research at Yale

For more than a decade, the BFF has been advancing biomedical innovation at Yale. This latest grant builds upon a legacy of generous support for creative science that reveals and translates the fundamental principles of human biology.

The BFF's ongoing support for inflammation science at Yale has already enabled numerous advances, from uncovering the basic principles that control inflammation to understanding the systemic interactions between the gut, the immune system, and the brain.

Pioneering researchers leading a new inflammation research initiative

A team of researchers will collaboratively lead the initiative. Ruslan Medzhitov, PhD, Sterling Professor of Immunobiology, who has made groundbreaking discoveries about the innate immune system, will serve as the initiative's director.

"Having known Len Blavatnik since I was honored with the first Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists in 2007, I am especially grateful for the foundation's continued support," says Medzhitov. Philanthropic support like this is increasingly vital because it enables the kind of creative, high-risk research that is often constrained by the rigid structure of federal funding."

Medzhitov will be joined in leadership by a team of fellow YSM colleagues: Noah Palm, PhD, professor of immunobiology, whose research focuses on how the microbiome shapes immune health; Liza Konnikova, MD, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics and of immunobiology, a physician-scientist who integrates expertise in neonatology, early-life immunity, and the study of the immune system in mucosal tissues; and Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, Sterling Professor of Immunobiology, whose research spans the mechanisms through which viruses, including the one that causes COVID-19, can permanently alter the immune system.

"This grant will fund our newest efforts to map the cellular and molecular conduits linking the gut and the brain, including studies focused on understanding how small molecules produced by our microbiome influence immune responses in distal tissues," explains Palm.

How Yale researchers are investigating inflammation's role in human disease

For years, inflammation was primarily studied in the context of specific diseases. This approach, while valuable, has limited the discovery of the underlying principles that connect seemingly unrelated conditions. Rather than examining inflammation only as a byproduct of disease, YSM researchers are studying it as a subject in its own right, clarifying how it shapes overall health and establishing a new area of scientific investigation.

The initiative will bring together experts from across YSM in fields such as cell biology, physiology, neuroscience, and genetics to tackle fundamental questions. The research will focus on how infection, environmental factors, and the microbiome influence the immune system and trigger inflammatory responses that affect everything from fetal development to brain health.

This collaborative spirit is central to the initiative's mission. Palm says, "I was thrilled to hear about this award and delighted to be included with my close colleagues in this unique effort. Philanthropic support such as this is essential to enable us to pursue bold new directions that would undoubtedly be deemed too risky by traditional funding sources. Such studies may reveal novel and unexpected molecular links between intestinal microbes, the immune system, and brain health, which may eventually reveal new gut-targeted therapies for diseases of the central nervous system."

Investing in future scientific leaders with new fellowships in inflammation science

A key component of the BFF's grant is an investment to establish the Blavatnik Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellows program, which will create a pipeline of talent dedicated to inflammation science.
