Yelena Baturina Makes the Forbes list of The World's Billionaires for 12th Consecutive Year as Russia's Richest Woman
LONDON, March 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --
In the latest ranking of The World's Billionaires, published by Forbes Magazine on the 20th of March, international entrepreneur and philanthropist Yelena Baturina with the fortune of USD 1 billion remains for the 12th consecutive year the richest woman of Russia, and the only Russian female billionaire in the world.
Yelena Baturina is also the only independent self-made woman entrepreneur in the construction section of the Forbes billionaires list; she is number 55 of 56 self-made women billionaires who have built their fortune from scratch. Altogether there are 227 women on the list, over 75% of them have inherited their wealth from family.
Yelena Baturina got first engaged in business in 1989 by setting up her first enterprise, specialising in the production of computer software. Two years later, she registered her company 'Inteco'. A plastics manufacturer at first, it soon expanded to encompass a number of interests in the construction sector. Initially serving as a director, then president, Yelena headed Inteco for two decades. Under her direction, the company swiftly became one of the country's leading construction firms, boasting a wide-ranging, award-winning portfolio that extended beyond the borders of Russia.
After selling 'Inteco' in 2011 Baturina moved her business headquarters to Europe. Since that time, she has been engaged in a number of successful commercial endeavours. At present her assets include a network of hotels (Ireland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Russia), renewable energy interests (Italy and Greece), a membrane construction enterprise (Germany), and development projects in the US and EU. In addition, she has invested in a number of real estate investment funds focused on residential and commercial construction and development in the UK and US.
Yelena Baturina is active in philanthropy mostly through the BE OPEN Foundation she set up in 2011. It is a cultural and social initiative which supports the promising new minds of the next generation through a system of conferences, competitions, exhibitions, master classes and art events. Among other things, BE OPEN is currently working in close partnership with the Mayor's Fund for London on a number of educational initiatives.
