YMCA of the USA Elects Five New Members to Board of Directors

CHICAGO, Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), national resource office for 2,700 Ys, announces the election of five members to the nonprofit's board of directors. Each will serve a three-year term on the 27-member board, which sets strategic direction and policy to guide Y-USA in providing Ys with the resources and support they need to strengthen community.

Y-USA welcomes the following new board members:

• John G. Conley, partner and co-founder of Gilliam Capital (Concord, Mass.)
• Janice Reals Ellig, co-CEO of Chadick Ellig (New York, N.Y.)
• Curt Hazelbaker, president and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
• Christopher A. Padilla, vice president of governmental programs of International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) (Washington, D.C.)
• Derrick Stewart, CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana (Evansville, Ind.)

In addition, the Y-USA board re-elected seven members: Garrett Boone, co-founder and chairman emeritus of The Container Store, (Dallas, Texas); Hugh A. Fitzpatrick, president of Princeton Capital Management (Princeton, N.J.); Matthew L. Hyde, president and CEO of West Marine (Watsonville, Calif.); Hon. Richard Jones, U.S. District Court Judge (Seattle, Wash.); Steven J. Malcolm, retired chairman, president and CEO of Williams (Tulsa, Okla.); Christine Marcks, president of Prudential Retirement (Hartford, Conn.); and Judah Sommer, senior counsel of Crowell & Morning (Chevy Chase, Md.).

New Y-USA Board Members

John G. Conley, Partner and Co-Founder of Gilliam Capital (Concord, Mass.)
John Conley is a partner and co-founder of Gilliam Capital, a life-science investment firm in Concord, Mass. He has spent several years in the biotechnology industry and is a special advisor to the investment banking firm of JSB Partners. Previously, Conley was vice president of business development at Transkaryotic Therapies up until its acquisition by Shire Pharmaceuticals, and was a co-founder of the RNA interference therapeutics company Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, where he held the position of vice president of strategy and finance and chief financial officer.

Conley is chairman of the board of the YMCA of Greater Boston and also serves on the boards of The Jericho Road Project and Danforth Museum of Art. He holds a master's degree in business administration from the Yale School of Management and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business.

Janice Reals Ellig, Co-CEO of Chadick Ellig (New York, N.Y.)
Janice Reals Ellig is Co-CEO of Chadick Ellig, a premier global executive search firm based in New York City. Ellig's 20-year corporate experience includes Pfizer, Citibank and Ambac Financial Group, which she helped take public after a spin-off from Citibank in 1991. Once named by Business Week as one of "The World's Most Influential Headhunters," Ellig is co-author of "Driving The Career Highway, 20 Road Signs You Can't Afford To Miss" (2007) and "What Every Successful Woman Knows: 12 Breakthrough Strategies to Get the Power and Ignite Your Career" (2001).  

Ellig is very active in philanthropy and has served on a number of boards for nonprofits such as the YMCA of Greater New York and the Corporate Board Initiative of the Women's Forum of New York. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the University of Iowa Foundation Board of Directors, the White House Project Advisory Council and the Economic Club of New York, among others. Ellig holds a master's degree in organizational development from Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., and a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Iowa.  

Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
Curt Hazelbaker is president and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, where he previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer. Hazelbaker is a 20-year YMCA veteran who began his career with the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas as a day camp counselor. There, he served in various positions and left as the vice president of operations.  

Committed to service, Hazelbaker is active on the state, regional and national levels with the Y. He currently serves as a board member at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly and chairs multiple YMCA groups. He also serves on the boards of several groups in North Carolina, including the Forsyth County Youth Advisory Council, United Way Impact Council, Healthy Carolinians Coalition and River Oaks Community Church. Hazelbaker holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Dallas and a certificate in nonprofit management from Duke University.

Christopher A. Padilla, Vice President of Governmental Programs of IBM (Washington, D.C.) Christopher Padilla is vice president of governmental programs of IBM, where he has led the company's global government affairs function since April 2009. Padilla previously served as under secretary for international trade at the U.S. Department of Commerce and was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the Congressional-Executive Commission on the People's Republic of China. Prior to his government service, Padilla worked for more than 15 years in the private sector with companies such as AT&T and Lucent Technologies.

Padilla serves on the boards of the Information Technology Industry Council, the Council of the Americas and the U.S.-India Business Council. He holds master's and bachelor's degrees in international studies from Johns Hopkins University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Derrick Stewart, CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana (Evansville, Ind.)
Derrick Stewart is the CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana in Evansville. He has served in a variety of roles during his 12-year YMCA career, including as program director, community outreach branch director, chief development officer and chief operating officer. Stewart is deeply committed to supporting and encouraging the development of a healthier and more vibrant community, and providing opportunities for young people from all walks of life to achieve their full potential. 

Stewart is past president of the Board of the Evansville Regional Airport Authority and the Public Education Foundation of Evansville, Inc. He is a member of the Regional Board of Trustees for Ivy Tech Community College, the Old National Bank Evansville Region Board of Directors and the Evansville Christian School Board. He also serves on numerous state and national YMCA advisory groups and task forces. Stewart holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
