LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T recognizes 29 employees from Kentucky who are being honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) for giving their time to transform their communities for the better.
The PVSA, the nation's premier volunteer awards program, gives U.S. Presidential recognition to individuals who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteerism throughout the year. AT&T employees in Kentucky are among 4,527 AT&T employees nationwide to receive this honor. They logged a minimum of 100 hours in service to others last year, with some employees reaching more than 500 volunteer hours to receive the Gold Award.
"The employees receiving the PVSA award are improving our community through their selfless acts every day – whether it's mentoring students, cleaning up our parks or helping feed those who are hungry," said Hood Harris, President, AT&T Kentucky. "We would like to congratulate these employees and hope their stories inspire others as much as they inspire us."
Impacting a community can take many forms. For AT&T engineering specialist Debra English, that means serving as the Director of a Food Ministry in the West Kentucky community of Ledbetter. "This spring will be my 5th year working with the ministry and I can honestly say the blessings I have received are more than I can express and have enriched my life more than I deserve," said Debra English.
In Louisville, Daniel Phillips gave more than 500 hours of service last year, serving as a Troop Chaplain with the Boy Scouts of America and serving meals in a downtown-food mission. "I'm honored to receive this award but giving back isn't something I do for recognition," said Daniel Phillips, engineering specialist, AT&T. "I start out thinking I'm doing something for someone else, but in the end, I almost always feel like I receive more than I give."
Rodney Arnold volunteers his time in Central Kentucky for a host of community efforts. From pitching in to help with youth sports and the high school marching band to serving at the Ronald McDonald House and the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, Rodney has a passion for helping others. "Each of the programs I volunteer my time to are near to my heart," said Rodney Arnold, digital technician, AT&T. "All of the hours that I have spent volunteering would never equal the fulfillment of seeing smiles on young kids' faces, values taught, and lives forever changed for the good."
Over time, these moments of giving can add up to millions of service hours. AT&T employees and retirees have volunteered more than 5.4 million hours in 2015 alone. To learn more about all of AT&T's PVSA winners go to about.att.com/pvsa.
PVSA is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is administered by Points of Light. With a shared mission of inspiring more to answer the call to service, PVSA celebrates the impact we can all make in bettering our communities and our world. The award is available on an annual basis and is an honor that every American – from youth to seniors – can participate in and be recognized by our nation's President for being civic leaders.
AT&T has participated in awarding employees with the PVSA since 2012, and the number of honored employees grows each year. To be eligible to receive the award, AT&T submits a record of employees' annual volunteer service hours to be verified and entered into consideration for the award.
