2nd Saturdays Downtown to Celebrate Tucson's Birthday
TUCSON, Ariz., July 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second year, 2nd Saturdays will celebrate Tucson's birthday with its biggest footprint ever, including cars, jazz, free concerts, music at the Fox Theatre and Scott Avenue Stage, and fun at Cricket Kids' area.
The Fox Theatre will host the free "Celebrate Tucson" concert sponsored by Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias in conjunction with Tucson's birthday month. Performers will include the Reveille Men's Chorus, Gabriel Ayala jazz and flamenco trio, singer-songwriter Rahe and her six-piece band, and Tucson Tejano big band, Suerte.
On Scott Avenue, an eclectic line-up of professional musicians will heat up the stage. Opening the night at 6:30 p.m. is the old school, classic country and blues rock of Cochise County All Stars. At 8 p.m., The Railbirdz will perform funky, R&B and soulful blues and, closing the night, will be classic rock covers by Five Way Street. Expect entertaining surprises between the sets!
The Screening Room will feature Puppets Amongus presenting "The Adventures of Thread Bear and Dust Bunny," sure to delight all ages. Shows are at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and cost $5 for adults, $4 for children.
Rialto Arts & Antiquities will host a Soul Celebration with the Southwest Soul Circuit on the back patio featuring Kevin and Tanishia Hamilton. The King Tut exhibit will be 2-for-1, and hip-hop artist Nipsey Hussle will be at the Rialto Theatre at 8 p.m. ($21).
The street scene will be hopping with car clubs, musicians and "jukebox" statues. Flanagan's Celtic Corner will host its annual "Best Legs in Kilts" contest. The Cricket Kids' area will have "Grease," the 1978 hit starring Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, as the free movie presented by Cinema La Placita. Downtown's recent addition, Atlas Fine Art Services at 41 S. 6th Avenue, will host Poets on Congress from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
2nd Saturdays Downtown runs from 5:30-10:30 p.m. with musicians and entertainment lining the streets from Stone Avenue to 5th Avenue.
