A Tuba to Cuba Brings New Orleans to Park City
Award-Winning Documentary Will Bring Louisiana-Style Southern Hospitality, Legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Arcade Fire during the Sundance Film Festival
PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 24, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- A Tuba to Cuba, the new documentary film on the history of New Orleans jazz, is bringing Big Easy heat to the Salesforce Music Lodge, held during the Sundance Film Festival this year. With plans to infuse the chilly mountain town with New Orleans flavor, the film's producers will provide guests with a mélange of Gulf Coast inspired food and drinks, as well as live jazz performances by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Arcade Fire in partnership with the Louisiana Office of Tourism and Louisiana Seafood during weekend one.
The documentary film, which premiered at SXSW in 2018 is centered on Ben Jaffe, the Creative Director of Preservation Hall, an iconic jazz club in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as they travel on a musical journey that follows the Afro-Hispanic-Caribbean legacy of jazz all the way to Havana. The band members find a strong link between the two deeply connected cultures and are able to communicate through each of their rich musical stylings and shared heritage. The cultural vibrancy displayed in the film will be injected throughout Park City during the weekend-long installation at the Salesforce Music Lodge. The activation, envisioned by Nicelle Herrington of Nom de Guerre Films, will bring New Orleans flavor to the film festival in many innovative ways. The Music Lodge will also serve as the Associated Press Festival Headquarters for the twelfth year where many high-profile celebrities conduct TV interviews and photoshoots during the festival.
"It was a journey all of us have been waiting to make, it really helped to define us as a band and taught us something we knew, but had to experience for ourselves," said Ben Jaffe, Musician and Creative Director of Preservation Hall.
Directed by T.G. Herrington and photographer Danny Clinch, A Tuba to Cuba draws viewers into a fantastical, colorful world where culture and music are enmeshed in and bring joy to everyday life. The moving film, distributed by Blue Fox Entertainment, will premiere for its theatrical release on February 15th.
"The message is actually quite simple. Let's stop talking about what keeps us apart and what makes us different and take the time to find what we have in common. And on that little piece of ground, that itty bitty space. Let's strive to build bridges as opposed to walls. Let's find what we have in common and celebrate that," said T.G. Herrington, Director of A Tuba to Cuba.
The A Tuba to Cuba activation will offer guests Louisiana delicacies such as fresh Gulf seafood, steaming gumbo, an oyster bar topped with Cajun Caviar, and signature craft cocktails inspired by the film. The menu was created by the 2018 King of American seafood, Chef Ryan Trahan, who hails from the famous Blue Dog Café in Lafayette. Ace Hotel New Orleans and Maison de La Luz, a new luxury guest house opening soon in New Orleans, will be gifting stays for weekend getaways to the birthplace of jazz to experience an evening at the famed Preservation Hall. New Orleans-based lifestyle brand, KREWE, will be gifting curated selections from their eyewear collection. The Salesforce Music Lodge, in partnership with A Tuba to Cuba, has sponsored musical performances by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as well as Win and Regine of Arcade Fire will take place during the evenings followed by a set by DJ Windows 98.
