AAPD Names New Board Officers And Trustees At Annual Session In Boston

CHICAGO, May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the leading authority on children's oral health, inducted the new president and other officers and trustees for the new AAPD board of trustees during its 67th Annual Session at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass., on May 25, 2014.

Edward H. Moody, Jr., D.D.S., President. Moody is in private practice in Morristown, Tenn. He is a graduate of Auburn University and the University Of Tennessee College Of Dentistry and received his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Medical College of Virginia. A diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) and a fellow in the American College of Dentists, he is active in numerous professional organizations, including the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, where he served on the Board of Directors and then held every elected office, completing his year as president in 2004. An AAPD member for 27 years, his involvement has included seats on the Council for Clinical Affairs, Annual Session Committee, Local Arrangements Committee for the 2000 Annual Session in Nashville, PAC Steering Committee, and as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, for which he was awarded the Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award in 2003. During his term on the AAPD board of trustees, he was a member of the Budget & Finance and Strategic Planning Committees, and was Board Liaison to the PAC Steering Committee and the Council on Communications. He is a national spokesperson of the AAPD.  His AAPD presidential agenda will include increasing AAPD's collaboration with other dental organizations, particularly internationally, growing the value of AAPD membership and the effectiveness and direction of the organization, and finally, acting on recommendations from the four Task Forces which are due to finish their work and report in May. A Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, his community activities include a term on the Executive Board of the Great Smoky Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America, positions on numerous church councils and committees, and a long standing membership on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Morristown. He and his wife Jenny are the parents of three daughters.

Robert L. Delarosa, D.D.S., President-Elect. Delarosa is the founding partner in a group private practice in Baton Rouge, La. He received his dental degree from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has been a member of AAPD for 25 years and has been a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry since 1991. Prior to serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board and the District V trustee, he was chair of the Council on Clinical Affairs, the District V representative to the AAPD Political Action Committee, and the Louisiana state leader for the AAPD Head Start Dental Home Oral Health Initiative. As the District V trustee, he also served on the Budget and Finance Committee and Ethics and Credentials Committee, as well as liaison to the Council on Clinical Affairs and the AAP Section on Oral Health. He is a national spokesperson of the AAPD.  Delarosa is a native of New Orleans and resides in Baton Rouge with his wife Mary. They have twins, Matt and Sara.

Jade Miller, D.D.S., Vice President. Miller has been a full time private practitioner in Reno, Nev., since 1983. He received his dental degree from the University of the Pacific Dental School and did his specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the Children's Hospital Medical Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He became involved with his local dental society 30 years ago, and that early beginning led to a lifetime of contributions to organized dentistry, governmental agencies, dental board examination communities and dental education. He served as AAPD District VI trustee from 2009-2012. He was also part of the first cohorts of Leadership Institute and Advanced Leadership Institute and served on the Governance Task Force, Councils of Continuing Education and Council on Communications. He is a national spokesperson of the AAPD.  In Nevada, Miller has served as president of the Northern Nevada Dental Society, Nevada Dental Association and Nevada Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Nationally, at the American Dental Association, he served as delegate for the 14th District and is currently on the Council for Dental Education and Licensure. Representing the Council, he chairs the ADA Committee on Anesthesiology and served as Chair of ADA Continuing Education Recognition Process Committee (CERP). The Nevada governor appointed Miller to the Nevada State Board of Health where he was the first dentist to be elected chairman, serving for four consecutive years. The governor also appointed him to the Medicaid Medical Advisory Committee and Board of Dental Examiners as past president. Miller has appointments as associate faculty at University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry, University of Washington, School of Dentistry and University of Nevada, School of Medicine. He and his wife Muffy are proud parents of three children and two grandchildren.

James D. Nickman, D.D.S., Secretary-Treasurer. Nickman earned his D.D.S. and Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota. He has been a member of the AAPD since 1999 and a diplomate of the ABPD since 2002. Nickman currently serves as the Minnesota Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Public Policy Advocate. He has served on the AAPD board of trustees as the District IV Trustee, liaison to the Council on Government Affairs, Council on Dental Benefit Programs, the Committee on the Adolescent and the Council on Membership. Nickman is a national spokesperson of the AAPD.  He is the past president of the Minneapolis District Dental Society and serves as the chair of the Minnesota Dental Association Barriers to Care Committee and serves on the MINDENPAC Board. He also is the past- president of the North Central Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Minnesota Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Alumni Society. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Nickman maintains a private practice in the Twin Cities and teaches part-time at the University of Minnesota. He and his wife, Jean, have three children: Beth, Kyle and Noah. He enjoys the outdoors and travel.

Warren A. Brill, D.M.D., M.S. (Hygiene), Immediate Past-President. Brill has a full-time private practice in Baltimore, Md. He has been an AAPD member for the past 21 years. He received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Maryland and the School of Medicine of Johns Hopkins University. Brill most recently served as AAPD President (2013-2014), AAPD president-elect (2012-2013), vice-president (2011-2012) and secretary-treasurer (2010-2011), as well as member of the board of trustees of the AAPD, representing District II (2005-2008). Prior to his board election, he was chair of the AAPD Council on Government Affairs and expert consultant to the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. He has also served as chair of the Council on Dental Benefit Programs. Brill is chair of the Maryland Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (MAPD) Legislative Affairs Committee (2000-2012), member of the MAPD Executive Committee (2000-2012) and chair of the MAPD Annual Meeting General Arrangements Committee (2006-2012). Brill also serves as a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration section on Oral Medical Devices. He is a fellow of the AAPD, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Presently, he is a clinical associate professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Maryland. Brill is the 2009 recipient of the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year Award. Brill resides in Maryland with his wife, Eva. They have two daughters, one grandson, two granddaughters and a frisky Airedale Terrier, Oliver. Brill is a national media spokesperson for the AAPD.

John A. Hendry, D.D.S., Parliamentarian. Hendry, a former resident of Dunedin, Florida, received his undergraduate degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1977 and completed his residency in Pediatric Dentistry in 1979 at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry. After finishing his residency, Hendry moved to Lafayette, Louisiana, the home of his wife Dr. Cheryl Woodson, a general dentist, and began private practice. Hendry has been involved in numerous dental and community programs and has been a national spokesperson for the AAPD since 1988. He served on the AAPD PAC since its inception, has served as president of the American Academy of Persons with Disabilities, and president and founding member of the Federation of Special Care Organizations in Dentistry. In addition, he is a member of Leadership Institute III and has served as Trustee at Large for the past three years. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a fellow of The American College of Dentists and a fellow of The International College of Dentists.  Hendry is a member of the United Way Hall of Fame, has served for 16 years on the United States Golf Association Junior Amateur Committee, was President of the Louisiana Open (PGA's Nationwide Tour), and founded the Louisiana Golf Foundation. He is the Founding Board Member and Dental Director of the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic for citizens in need. Hendry is a member of the Board of Trustees of Spring Hill College and Home Bank Board of Directors. He is a graduate of Leadership Louisiana and in 2001 received the "Ignatian Award," the highest alumni honor given by Spring Hill College. 

Brian A. Beitel, D.D.S., B.S., M.S., Southeastern Trustee. Beitel earned a B.S. in Biology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and his D.D.S. from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis, Tennessee, followed by an M.S. in Pediatric Dentistry also from the University of Tennessee. Since 2006, Dr. Beitel has served on the Education Board of the University of Tennessee Pediatric Dental Alumni Association. He has been a member of the AAPD for over 27 years. During this time he has served on the New Pediatric Dentist Committee of the Council on Membership and Membership Services, Scientific Program Committee for the Council on Annual Session and the Council for Continuing Education, which he presently chairs. Beitel also is a member of AAPD's Task Force on Enhancing the Value of General Dentist Membership and has recently begun his tenure as the AAPD's representative to the ADA's CERP Committee. Beitel has been in private practice in Huntsville, Alabama for over 27 years. He has served as President of the Huntsville-Madison Dental Society and presently holds seats on the Boards of The Riley Center for Autism, United Cerebral Palsy and The Calhoun Community College Dental Assisting Program. He lives with his wife Christy, children Caroline and Connor, and stepchildren Taylor, Abbey and Simon. Caroline is currently in her third year at University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham and Connor is a senior at Sewanee: The University of the South.

Scott D. Smith, D.D.S., M.S., At Large Trustee. Smith maintains a practice in Centennial, CO. After completing his graduate studies at The University of Michigan in 1988, he partnered with his brother, Dr. Brad Smith, to establish Southmoor Pediatric Dentistry. He was appointed to the Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners and served for eight years, the final four as Chairman. At the Children's Hospital of Colorado, he serves on the Medical Staff Board and as an Adjunct Faculty. As a member of the AAPD, Smith has served on multiple committees, including Chairman of the Committee for Adolescent Health, Local Arrangements Chair for the 2001 Annual Session in Denver, as well as part of both the Leadership Institute II and the Advanced Leadership Institute. Smith, along with his wife Debbie and their three sons, enjoy an active Colorado lifestyle that includes skiing, cycling and fly fishing. Additionally, he enjoys playing in an adult ice hockey league.

Kerry Maguire, D.D.S., M.S.P.H., Affiliate Member Trustee. Maguire is Associate Clinical Investigator and Director of ForsythKids, a school-based prevention program of The Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, Mass. She also holds adjunct faculty positions at the University of Washington Center for Pediatric Dentistry and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Maguire completed her dental degree at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in 1988 and earned a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry the following year. In 1993, she received a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She has experience in dental education and industry, having previously held positions as Director of the Advanced Clinical Training and Service Program at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry (1989-1996), Academic Relations Manager at Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals (1996-1999), Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Public Health at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (1999-2003) and Director of Professional Advocacy for Tom's of Maine (2003-2009). Maguire is co-founder and chair of the non-profit dental aid organization Options for Children in Zambia. She is active in the AAPD, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and the American Dental Association, among other national and international organizations dedicated to oral health and health access.

Man Wai Ng, D.D.S., M.P.H., American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Director. Ng is Chief of the Department of Dentistry at Boston Children's Hospital and is an Assistant Professor of Developmental Biology (Pediatric Dentistry) at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She received her D.D.S. from Stony Brook University, her M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health and her certificate in pediatric dentistry from Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard. She has been a member of the AAPD since 1992 and is a national spokesperson. Ng has served on the AAPD Board of Trustees as the District I Trustee, and has served as Chair of the Council on Scientific Affairs and the Council on Postdoctoral Education.  She received her ABPD certification in 1997.  Ng and her husband, Douglas Chin, live in Brookline, Massachusetts with their two sons, Brendan and Devin.
