Embedded power supplies in the lower wattage ranges are projected to make up a growing majority of the unit market over the entire forecast period. In fact, the percentage of embedded ac-dc power supplies under 300W is anticipated to grow to over 90.0% of the embedded power supply unit market share by 2018.
Given the new areas of opportunity including the emerging smart grid, the growth of solid state lighting and new developments in building automation, a number of new dynamics are coming into play. Among the areas to watch are advances in technology, components and materials, in particular advanced semiconductor materials such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium nitride (GaN), both of which are expected to have an impact on the power supply market over the coming years?
Despite its large size, the consumer segment will be one of the least attractive areas for power supply manufacturers. This highly commoditized segment is expected to make up one of the larger unit markets, while maintaining one of the smaller dollar markets over the forecast period. Consisting largely of lower-wattage and inexpensive power supplies, this segment depends on lower-cost, captive production to produce the large volumes required for the consumer market.
One of the serious long-term threats facing the embedded ac-dc power supply industry is the further development of direct-current (dc) powered installations and buildings. In fact, the introduction of dc power to industries that traditionally rely on ac power is expected to cause a fundamental shift in how new and existing buildings are designed and operated. It will require manufacturers to design new products, adopt new standards and completely re-design their approach to power delivery systems.
The portable medical device market is one of the smaller segments covered. It does not benefit from the economies of scale and volume pricing conditions existing in the other power supply industries. However, the outlook for the medical power supply market is strong. In addition to hospitals and other medical facilities, medical devices are being purchased for homes, businesses, commercial facilities and other personal uses.
The portable military/aerospace market is also one of the smaller sectors. Like the medical sector, this sector must meet and comply with a number of strict standards and regulations that do not typically apply to other applications. Although it maintains the highest average selling price per unit, it is a small market and does not offer the number of opportunities as the other applications covered in this report.
