Accentus Launches Coding Advice Column to Impart Canadian Experience
Former HIM Director Answers Questions, Debunks Myths, and Helps Providers Prepare for ICD-10.
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Accentus, Inc.™, a leading provider of integrated document management solutions, announces a new monthly online advice column focused on clinical coding and ICD-10 preparation with a Canadian twist. The column, "Dear Doris", shares real-world, practice advice for clinical coding management; and lessons learned from Canada's eleven years of ICD-10 experience. The column is free of charge and open to receive any coding or HIM question. The announcement was made by Susan L. Sumner, Executive VP of Marketing and Product Development of Accentus.
"U.S. healthcare provider organizations are challenged with ICD-10 preparedness and struggling to set realistic expectations for their physicians, staffs and senior executives," mentions Doris Gemmell, BSc, CHIM, Director of Coding Services for Accentus. This column is in response to that need. Gemmell has over twenty years' experience as HIM Director for several Canadian hospitals.
"Industry experts within the U.S. bemoan the fact that no one has experience with ICD-10," mentions Sumner. "But yet Canadian providers have been using ICD-10 for eleven years, having transitioned from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in 2001," she concludes. And despite the difference in reimbursement systems, there are many more similarities between the two countries specific to clinical coding and the migration to ICD-10 (e.g. conversion, implementation, physician documentation and training).
As the leading document management company in Canada with over 760 outsourced medical transcription, coding and scanning clients worldwide, Accentus has much to share. The "Dear Doris" blog is an interactive conduit for this knowledge exchange. Beyond ICD-10 discussions, the "Dear Doris" column covers the current ICD-9 situation, including tips on coding template development to assure easy transition to ICD-10, labor resources that can function in both environments as well as workflow consulting.
