AccessHope Releases New Real‑World Evidence Showing Remote Oncology Expert Recommendations Adopted in Over 50% of Cases
Adoption of evidence‑based anticancer therapy generates median savings exceeding $60,000 per patient
Findings to be presented at 2026 ASCO Quality Care Symposium
DUARTE, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- AccessHope, a company expanding access to world-class cancer care, will share real-world evidence demonstrating how remote oncology expert review drives meaningful improvements in cancer care nationwide. In a poster presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Quality Care Symposium on October 17 at 7:10 a.m. ET, AccessHope will present new findings showing that expert review identified at least one opportunity to improve care in 81% of cases and treating oncologists implemented at least one expert-recommended change in half of cases. The research also reveals that adoption of evidence-aligned recommendations generated median savings of more than $18,000 per case, with median savings exceeding $60,000 when anticancer therapy recommendations were implemented.
"Last year at ASCO's Quality Care Symposium, we showed that remote expert recommendations can meaningfully bridge socioeconomic and geographic barriers in cancer care, particularly for patients in non‑urban communities. This year's real‑world evidence takes that a step further," said Debra Wong, MD, lead author of the study and vice president, Development and Integration, Clinical Strategy and medical director for AccessHope. "We're now seeing that treating oncologists are not only receiving expert guidance, they're implementing it in more than half of eligible cases, improving care quality and generating substantial cost savings. Our research reinforces a simple truth: When subspecialty expertise reaches every corner of the country, patients benefit, regardless of where they live."
This research analyzed claims data of 1,417 cases in which AccessHope connected treating oncologists in 47 states with subspecialty experts at National Cancer Institute‑Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (NCI-CCCs) for expert case reviews that provided opportunities to improve care across six clinical domains: anticancer therapy, diagnostics, imaging and surveillance, symptom management, lifestyle and behavioral, and palliative care.
Key Findings
- Expert review suggested evidence-based care changes in the majority of cases. Changes to care were recommended in 81% of cases, with patients living in non-urban areas, those with late-stage cancer, and female patients having higher odds of receiving care change recommendations.
- Adoption of recommended care changes occurred in more than half of cases and was associated with significant savings. Claims-based validation showed that recommendations were adopted in 51% of cases. The median savings from recommendations adopted for anticancer therapy was $60,759.
AccessHope's peer-reviewed research will be published along with meeting proceedings in JCO Oncology Practice later this year.
This study further validates AccessHope's prior population‑based research, which demonstrated that remote expert review frequently identifies gaps in care, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged and non‑urban patients. This year's analysis advances that work by showing the frequency in which those recommended changes are implemented, offering a clearer picture of real‑world impact.
Study Methodology
AccessHope provides remote, asynchronous recommendations by oncologists at NCI-CCCs, delivered to the patient's health plan and treating oncologist. In a retrospective analysis of 1,417 eligible cases that had completed adjudication of recommendation issuance and claims-based adoption validation. Pre-specified outcomes were any recommended care change and adoption of any recommendation. Category-specific adoption was assessed for six clinical domains. Logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, stage, and Rural-Urban Commuting Area codes, with multiple imputation for missing codes (3.2%). Claims-based, per-case cost savings were calculated by applying stage- and diagnosis-specific national cost-of-care benchmarks to the highest-ranked adopted recommendation, once per case over a 12-month period.
