ADL Applauds Hawaii Governor Abercrombie for Signing Historic Civil Unions Bill Into Law
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) Central Pacific Region, covering all of Northern California, Hawaii, and Utah, congratulates and applauds Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie for signing the Legislature's historic bill adopting civil unions into law.
The law will allow couples in Hawaii to enter into relationships that will have the protections and benefits that Hawaiian law affords to married couples. These benefits, which can affect adoption rights, family leave, health insurance, tax deductions, civil actions related to spousal status, and emergency medical decision-making and hospital visitation, are critical human and civil rights. Providing these benefits to all classes of citizens regardless of their sexual orientation marks a significant step towards full equality for all Americans.
ADL's Regional Director Daniel S. Sandman stated that, "We celebrate the legislators and activists who are making the dream of equality a reality for all Hawaiians. This is a monumental and proud day for the people of Hawaii."
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
