MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 15, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Delivering on a Promise is a publication highlighting Le Bonheur Children's Hospital's newest programs, research breakthroughs and innovative ways of caring for children. The Spring 2015 edition features the story of 10-year-old Jasmine McGaughy, a scoliosis patient at Le Bonheur Children's Pediatric Spine Center in Memphis, Tenn. Due to an adolescent growth spurt, Jasmine's scoliosis went from a 19-degree curve, to an uncomfortable 59 degrees. Scoliosis occurs in about 2 to 3 percent of adolescents, but curves range from mild to severe. Curves more than 50 degrees, like Jasmine's, can cause rib and lung issues, make breathing more difficult and often require surgery.
The Pediatric Spine Center at Le Bonheur Children's is offering a new method of treatment to reduce the number of scoliosis patient surgeries. MAGEC (Magnetic Expansion Control) is an alternative to traditional growing rods, allowing surgeons to gradually straighten and correct the spine by using less invasive growing rods. Orthopaedic spine surgeon Jeffrey Sawyer, MD, is Jasmine's physician and one of the first surgeons in the country to offer MAGEC.

Also featured in the article is information about Le Bonheur's Pediatric Spine Center and surgeons Jeffrey Sawyer, M.D. and William Warner, M.D. Delivering on a Promise is published three times per year and can be viewed at www.lebonheur.org/promise.
