All-Time High: Georgia College Ranked No. 4 in South by U.S. News & World Report

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga., Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia College & State University was named No. 4 among all public colleges and universities in the 12-state regional South in U.S. News & Report's 2027 Best Colleges list, released today.

After cracking the Top 5 in the South for the first time in its 137-year history last year, this No. 4 placement marks two consecutive years of record-high rankings for Georgia College, extending a period of unprecedented growth for the institution that began in 2022.

New notable highs recorded for GCSU this year, among 152 public and private institutions ranked in the Regional South — from Arkansas on the west to Virginia on the east coast — are listed as follows:

• No. 1: Best Value for In-State Students in Georgia
  • This is a new category in this ranking cycle.
• No. 1: Best Value Public Schools in Georgia
  • GCSU moved from second to first place this year.
• No. 2: Best Undergraduate Teaching, Regional South
  • GCSU improved three places from its No. 5 placement in this category last year.
• No. 4: Top Public School, Regional South
  • Improved from No. 5 in the 2026 rankings
• No. 7: Most Innovative Schools, Regional South
  • GCSU jumped up two places this year, also placing No. 1 Most Innovative among public schools in Georgia.

That headstart gives students a crucial advantage over their peers at larger universities in developing the skills that employers value most."

Since 2022, applications to Georgia College have grown more than 75%, reaching a record high in April, 2026 of more than 10,000 applications for the current academic year. The entering class of 2030 is also the largest in university history, at nearly 1,850 first-year students. Current enrollment sits at an all-time high of almost 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students.

Despite the steady increase in students, GCSU maintains a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and three of every four classes on the university's Milledgeville-based campus have fewer than 30 students. The university's focus on mentored undergraduate research also provides unique opportunities for students through programs such as the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

"It was challenging for some students [from other universities] to get started with the research process because it was their first time in a lab setting, but I was ready because we get awesome opportunities at GCSU," said junior physics and mathematics major Jude Doredant, who completed an REU this summer. "I was able to begin immediately."

Additionally, students in the university's unique Pre-Med Mentoring Program have generated a 100% placement rate into medical school for each of the past 16 years. And scholar-athletes at Georgia College have scored No. 1 in the nation for academic success rate among all public NCAA DII schools every year since 2000.

GCSU also remains a major economic development engine for Middle Georgia, with a reported $360 million economic impact on the region.

Georgia College earned high marks in additional categories in the 2027 Best Colleges rankings, including securing the top spot in all four academic programs measured, listed as follows:

• Overall - Regional Universities: No. 14 (among 152 public and private universities from Virginia to Arkansas)
• Social Mobility: No. 5 in Georgia (among public universities)
• Business: No. 1 in Georgia (among public institutions in the Regional South)
• Nursing: No. 1 in Georgia (among public universities in Regional South)
• Psychology: No. 1 in Georgia (among public universities in the Regional South)
• Computer Science: No. 1 in Georgia (among public universities in the Regional South)

Georgia College graduate programs were recognized earlier this year, as well, ranking among the Top Five in Georgia. The university has also earned national honors from Colleges of Distinction, The Princeton Review and several other ranking organizations.

A "regional" university, according to U.S News & World Report, is one that offers a full range of undergraduate programs and some master's programs but few doctoral programs. U.S. News & World Report's ranking methodology is based on student-success metrics, including graduation rates, graduate indebtedness and post-graduate earnings.
