A&M-San Antonio Celebrates Opening of $55 Million Public Health and Education Building

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas A&M University-San Antonio celebrated the grand opening of its Public Health and Education Building, marking a major milestone in the University's efforts to expand health education, research and workforce training across South Texas.

The $55 million, state-of-the-art facility spans 35,000 square feet and includes classrooms, research laboratories and administrative spaces. It houses the College of Education and Human Development, the Community Health Program and the Genetics and Genomics Group, which studies genetic and environmental factors contributing to rare and complex disorders.

Special guests at the grand opening included Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar, who emphasized the facility's potential to improve lives and address critical community needs.

"This building is where a lot of the people who will care for this community will get their education, including future teachers, public health professionals, and researchers working on the health problems that hit families here the hardest," Hegar said.

He also highlighted the building's role in strengthening the collaboration among A&M-San Antonio, the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine and University Health, which recently opened the Vida clinic next to campus and will open the neighboring Palo Alto Hospital in 2027.

Launched in 2022 and formally solidified earlier this year, the partnership will bring Texas A&M College of Medicine students and faculty into the new building, providing classroom and office space to support medical education and training. The collaboration is expanding healthcare education and access to medical services in South San Antonio and aims to train and retain more physicians to serve Bexar County's rapidly growing population.

"Students and faculty from Texas A&M's Vashisht College of Medicine will have classrooms and offices in this building, right across the street from the hospital where they'll treat patients," Hegar said. "Doctors tend to put down roots where they train. We want more of them putting down roots here."

A&M-San Antonio President Salvador Hector Ochoa emphasized that the new facility represents more than an investment in infrastructure. It will create additional educational pathways, expand research opportunities, and support the University's growth in health- and science-related programs. This includes a new bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences that will launch in Fall 2027, providing a pathway for students interested in medicine, biomedical research and other health professions.
