John Rodman joined the Society in 1999 as Director of Marketing and Communications. As the Director of Museum Experience, John oversees all visitor services, marketing and public relations activities. Under his tenure the Newport Mansions has become one of the four most visited museums in New England. And, because of the hard work and dedication of his team, and through the implementation of new strategical marketing approaches, the Newport Mansions remain the most visited destination attraction in Rhode Island.
"Building a world-class brand for a major museum starts with having a world-class organization to promote," said Rodman. "To then be recognized for marketing success as a museum in the company of all manner of non-profit organizations really underlines the phenomenal quality of the entire team with which I work at The Preservation Society of Newport County."
"This award recognizes John Rodman's innovation and success in creating new visitor experiences, and leading our communications and customer service team." said Preservation Society CEO & Executive Director Trudy Coxe. "That in turn is a reflection of the entire organization's commitment to excellence and innovation."
The Preservation Society finished calendar year 2012 with its best attendance in a decade. Admissions to the Newport Mansions grew by 86,000 to a total of 883,000 in 2012. This one-year increase of 11 percent, the strongest on record, followed the investment of over $1 million in four new tours over the last four years. These include adult and youth audio tours at The Breakers, an audio tour at Rosecliff, and the Servant Life Tour at The Elms. Reflecting their popularity with a global audience, the audio tours are all offered in Spanish, French and German, as well as English, with Mandarin translations to be added this year.
Prior to working in the non-profit sector, John enjoyed a career in journalism and government. He has held news management positions at Standard News in Washington, D.C., WCDJ-FM and WEEI Newsradio (CBS); was a correspondent for NBC and CBS Radio, and a lecturer at Northeastern University. He is a member of AMA, American Association of Museums, National Press Club and emeritus member of the White House Correspondents Association. He was the recipient of the National Headliner Award, Best Investigation, and received three management and 24 corporate excellence awards from the Associated Press, United Press International, and Radio and Television News Directors Association. His most recent position prior to joining the Preservation Society was as Assistant Secretary of Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
