American Airlines Celebrates 25 Years of Service Between Dallas/Fort Worth and Japan

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty five years ago today on May 21, 1987, American Airlines launched its first ever service to Asia when it started flights between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Tokyo Narita (NRT). To put that in perspective, that same year Michael Jackson released his "Bad" album, while Ronald Reagan was president of the United States.

American's customers had only one option when traveling to Asia in 1987 – the DFW-Tokyo Narita flight. Today, through its joint business agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL), customers now have the option of nearly 200 weekly flights to and from Asia.

This June, from JAL's Tokyo-Narita and Haneda hubs, American will codeshare on more than 90 JAL flights to cities such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore and others throughout Asia and Japan.

Last year, American and JAL implemented a joint business allowing the two airlines to cooperate commercially on nonstop flights between North America and Asia. The enhanced relationship between the airlines further establishes American's commitment to Asia and provides customers with a route network to more than 320 destinations in more than 60 countries with about 4,300 daily departures.

Since the launch of the American/Japan Airlines joint business agreement, the two carriers have added new service between Boston and Tokyo-Narita; Los Angeles and Shanghai; and will launch new San Diego-Tokyo Narita service later this year.

In addition, JAL has moved into American's terminal at Chicago O'Hare for improved and faster connections, while both airlines have coordinated departure and arrival times for improved customer choice.

And, effective June 1, American will reinstate nonstop service between JFK and Tokyo Haneda (HND) using its three-class Boeing 777 aircraft while ending its JFK-NRT flight. American's new JFK-HND flight complements JAL's nonstop service between JFK and NRT. The combination of American's JFK-HND nonstop and the JAL JFK-NRT nonstop provides customers with more choices of airports and travel options to Asia.
