American Board of Medical Specialties Research and Education Foundation Announces Recipients of 2026 - 2028 Research Grants

 Research grants totaling $300,000 were awarded to four independent investigators

CHICAGO, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Research and Education Foundation (REF) has announced the recipients of its 2026-2028 research grants. In its third year, the program awarded four two-year, $75,000 grants representing $300,000 in funding, and is part of a continued commitment by the ABMS REF to support independent research into the process of achieving and maintaining high certification standards.

Recipients of this year's grants are:

• Holly Caretta-Weyer, MD, MHPE, Associate Professor, Stanford University School of Medicine - From Exposure to Entrustment: Mapping Resident Competency Development for Individualized Pathways in Emergency Medicine Training
• Daniel Donoho, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Children's National Hospital - BRIDGE: Building Reliable Insights from Data across Graduate training to Early practice
• Brian Garibaldi, MD, MEHP, Professor of Medicine, Northwestern University - Harnessing EHR Data to Develop Low-touch Assessments of Bedside Clinical Skills
• Martin Wegman, MD, PhD, MSc, FACEP, Head of Research, American College of Emergency Physicians - Practice‑Derived Knowledge Needs in Emergency Medicine: Comparing Millions of AI Clinical Information Queries With ABEM Assessment Blueprints

Following formal notice of their submission selection, grant recipients' projects will begin on August 31, 2026, and continue for a two-year project period through August 31, 2028. The grant program is anticipated to be hosted annually with the potential for a new cycle of requests for proposals released later this year.
