AMLU and OPEIU to Present Check to 'Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure' to Help Strike Out Prostate Cancer
NEW YORK, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of Minor League Umpires (AMLU)/OPEIU Guild 322 and its parent organization, Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO, CLC will present a check for $5,000 to "Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure" on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at noon at Foley's Pub and Restaurant in NYC. Foley's Pub and Restaurant is located at 18 West 33rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in New York City. Lunch will be served. A number of Minor League umpires will be in attendance, including AMLU/OPEIU Guild 322 President Shaun Francis, as well as OPEIU International President Michael Goodwin.
During Father's Day weekend (June 19-20), more than 200 minor league umpires opened their personal checkbooks and donated 1 cent for every pitch thrown at their Minor League Baseball games. Additionally, OPEIU pledged to match the umpires' donations.
The AMLU represents the more than 200 minor league umpires working in the 16 domestic professional minor leagues. With a three umpire crew in double A or Triple A levels, the donation meant a combined 3 cents per pitch.
"Every year AMLU members go beyond the call of duty, and this year they made the easiest call they could make and donated money for prostate cancer," said Francis, himself a Triple A umpire in the Pacific Coast League. "Raising money for research that will help our fathers, brothers and friends is so important and something our members feel very strongly about. Ed Randall is a great advocate for prostate cancer awareness, and a long-time friend of umpires," Francis continued.
"OPEIU is very proud to support this cause so important to our AMLU members, and to do our part to help strike out prostate cancer," said President Goodwin.
