CHICAGO, Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Veterans looking for a new career after military service can get a head start in the real estate appraisal profession through the Appraisal Institute's Next Mission Scholarship, a $1,000 tuition award designed to help veterans pursue careers in appraisal, valuation and related fields.
The scholarship is part of the Appraisal Institute's Veterans Initiative Program, which helps veterans explore opportunities in the appraisal profession and make the transition from military service to a civilian career. The initiative recognizes that veterans already bring many of the skills that are valuable in appraisal, including leadership, discipline, attention to detail, problem-solving and analytical thinking.
"Veterans have spent their service reading terrain, weighing risk and making decisions that hold up under scrutiny," said Jim Slawnikowski, acting CEO, Appraisal Institute. "That's the work of an appraiser. The Next Mission Scholarship is our way of telling veterans that the profession wants them, and of taking cost off the table as a reason not to start."
A New Career After Military Service
Starting a civilian career can be a big transition, but veterans may find that many of the skills they developed in the military translate well to real estate appraisal.
Appraisers evaluate properties, markets and economic conditions to develop independent opinions of value. The work calls for careful analysis, attention to detail, sound judgment and the ability to work with complex information, skills that veterans develop in a wide range of military roles.
Beyond financial assistance, the program provides access to education and career resources through the Appraisal Institute's Veterans Initiative, including information about courses, professional development, scholarships and opportunities to learn more about becoming an appraiser.
Applications must be completed online, with all required supporting materials uploaded to the applicant's grant profile. Applications must be complete and accurate to be considered for review.
The application deadline is October 30, 2026, with the scholarship award scheduled for November 16, 2026.
