Astellas Partners With Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care To "Bring Science to the Bedside"
DUBLIN, Ohio, Jan. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Astellas Pharma US, Inc. and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) announced a new two-year partnership to promote the improved triage and treatment of patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain.
"Our new observation medicine and observation services focus fits nicely into our overall goal of 'bringing science to the bedside'," said SCPC Chief Executive Officer Wil Mick. "Astellas shares that interest, and will be working in collaboration with the Society to promote observation medicine as well as related key scientific initiatives."
Background on SCPC and Observation Services
Observation services are intended for patients who may not need to be admitted as inpatients to the Hospital, but need additional testing or treatment beyond the initial ED visit, before they can be sent home safely. Services can be provided virtually or in a dedicated space. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) recognize observation services as an option for patient care.
Only one third of U.S. hospitals have observation units, and 52% of those are run by the ED.
Studies have shown that observation units are efficient, save hospitals money, shorten length of stay, and improve patient satisfaction. By using observation services appropriately, the US healthcare system would save an estimated $3.1 billion per year nationally by avoiding 2.4 million inpatient admissions.
SCPC is focused on "bringing science to the bedside," by promoting evidence-based cardiovascular care. Observation services have emerged as an increasingly important approach to chest pain evaluation and as such the Society has launched the next generation of accreditation services called Chest Pain Center v5, which was introduced at the 17th Annual SCPC Congress, held April 30-May 1, 2014 in San Diego, CA.
As a process improvement organization with more than 1,000 hospitals utilizing its methodologies, SCPC has a specific focus on the growing area of observation services, especially the impact on hospital efficiency, cost, and quality.
SCPC is also a leader in identifying the ways observation services reduces readmissions penalties and enhances value-based purchasing scores. It also teaches strategies for the implementation of observation services in a healthcare facility.
The Society co- sponsored the first-ever Observation Medicine Conference in 2013 and was a sponsor for the 2014 event in conjunction with the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, September 11-12, in Troy, MI.
