MADISON, Ind., June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today announced the availability of its mobile Internet network in Jefferson and Jennings Counties in time for summer activities, including the July boat race in Madison. Two recreational areas, Clifty Falls and Muscatatuck state parks, are included in the expansion as well as several communities. The towns are Madison, Hanover, North Vernon, Blocher, Paris Crossing, Lancaster, Belleview and Ringwald. The local wireless network upgrade extends access for advanced mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content to customers in the areas.
"Investment in new technology for Madison and Hanover businesses and consumers could not come at a better time as we continue to market our area to the world as an ideal place to live, work and raise a family," said State Representative Terry Goodin.
From 2009 through 2011, AT&T invested more than $1 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in Indiana. AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile Internet networks, devices and applications. With the nation's fastest mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an amazing wireless voice and data experience.
"By bringing new technology and improved wireless service to our community, our students are better able to stay in touch with friends and family, but more importantly, they can access information from around the world in the palm of their hand," said Hanover College President Sue Dewine.
AT&T's mobile Internet network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 225 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as mobile Internet services in more than 130 countries.
"Representative Goodin and President Dewine understand the direct connection between wireless investment and economic growth," said AT&T Indiana President George S. Fleetwood. "They know the opportunities for job creation and enhanced education will increase the overall quality of life and build an even stronger community."
AT&T also operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** with more than 30,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 225,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly wireless data plans.
"Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing rapidly, and we want to meet that demand for our customers," said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager, AT&T Indiana and Michigan. "We're excited to bring mobile Internet to several communities in Jefferson and Jennings counties, along with the two area state parks."
