PENN YAN, N.Y., Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of a new mobile broadband cell site in Yates County. New areas of coverage include the city of Penn Yan, Bluff Point, Keuka Lake Park, Barrington and the northern end of Keuka Lake.
With mobile broadband speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.
"More than ever before, customers look to wireless communications to stay connected," said Amy Hines Kramer, regional vice president of external affairs, AT&T, New York. "We're committed to expanding the network in more areas of the state. In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA will strengthen and expand our network across New York. If approved, this deal means that we'll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband – 4G LTE – from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent."
AT&T invested more than $200 million in its New York wireless and wireline networks in the first half of 2011.
"Delivering dependable wireless coverage for consumers and businesses who need to stay connected to work, family and friends is critical," Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I - Steuben and Yates) said. "These investments in the state help New York's business economy grow while residents maintain access to wireless services, enabling them to advance their communication to keep pace with today's ever-expanding opportunities."
The new cell site is one part of AT&T's ongoing efforts to drive investment and innovation to deliver the nation's best, most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. With the nation's fastest mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities.
"Our goal is pretty simple: We want you to have an extraordinary experience when you make a call, check e-mail, or share photos via social media from your AT&T device," said Robert Holliday, vice president and general manager, AT&T Upstate/Western NY. "As part of the community in Yates County, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage that helps to drive the local economy. Our investment in our wireless network is just one way to accomplish this."
AT&T's mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world.
