HAMPTON ROADS, Va., March 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today announced the completion of a key initiative in its ongoing efforts to enhance the wireless capacity and performance of its mobile broadband network in Hampton, Yorktown and Poquoson. As a result of this upgrade to eight mobile broadband cell sites, local customers are expected to experience improved mobile broadband wireless data and voice connectivity and performance, especially during peak hours.
Areas of enhanced capacity include:
- Hampton: Wythe Creek Road, Magruder and Commander Shepard Boulevards, and the communities of Drummonds Corner and Big Bethel and the NASA Langley Research Center.
- Yorktown: George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown Road, Hampton Highway and Victory Boulevard. The network is also now available in the neighborhoods of Mill Farms, Harwood Mill and Lakeside and the Shady Banks and Hermitage Square Shopping Centers and the York County Sports Complex.
- Poquoson: Little Florida Road, Poquoson Avenue, Wythe Creek Road and Cary's Chapel Road and the Poquoson High School and the Wythe Creek Plaza Shopping Center.
The network enhancement adds new layers of frequency, also known as "carriers," to more efficiently manage available spectrum and increase mobile broadband capacity at local cell sites. The expansion helps manage ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services by allocating more network resources for AT&T's mobile broadband network.
"Delivering the fastest mobile broadband coverage for consumers and businesses who need to stay connected is our ultimate objective," said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid Atlantic. "Our ongoing investments in Virginia will help ensure that our customers have access to the mobile broadband services that help drive continued economic growth."
"Our goal is pretty simple: we want you to have an extraordinary experience when you make a call, check e-mail, download a song or video, or surf the Internet on your AT&T device," said Erika K. Thompson-Kemp, vice president and general manager for AT&T in Virginia and West Virginia. "As part of the Hampton Roads community, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide an enhanced customer experience and our investment in the local wireless network is just one way to accomplish this."
